Clovelly Golf Course and Country Club is situated between the villages of Fish Hoek and Kalk Bay. Raymond Ackerman, former chairman of the vast and efficient supermarket chain Pick ’n Pay, is the president of Clovelly Country Club. It has for many years been a favourite course among visiting overseas guests, not only for its lush appearance, but also for its excellent clubhouse facilities.

The course, which has enjoyed a long-term reputation for its year-round condition, has over time further enhanced its charm with the introduction of new water features. These visually pleasing features, impact on the 1st,10th,15th and 17th holes. However, it is at the short 11th, that the water and alterations create a superb picture to lead into the challenge. The clubhouse, which has also continuously been tastefully upgraded, is perched high above the course, from where you have a vantage point over not only the 18th hole, but also the 1st and 10th holes which both feature sharp doglegs, to the right and left respectively. This will immediately tell you that accurate tee shots are required, something you will be reminded of constantly on this narrow, dune-lined golf course. During the summer months, you can expect to have a little (and sometimes, a lot of) wind, which adds to the difficulty on this very attractive course.

A wonderful new addition has been the introduction of excellent practice facilities, while the relocation of the pro-shop has created an excellent first impression.

Gould’s Special Note:

Dave Odendaal, the club professional is a long time servant to this friendly club. He and his team have a way of making the welcome memorable. His shop is of high quality and in many cases excellent value.

7th Hole – Par 4 – Men 354 m Ladies 306 m
The high tee, in the shadow of the mountain on the left, gives you a good view of this hole that doglegs to the left. You have a narrow target at which to aim and the fairway slopes from left to right. Trees on the left will have you aiming to the right where there is more space. The second shot is to an uphill green protected by bunkers on each side leaving a narrow entrance to negotiate.
8th Hole – Par 3 – Men 191 m Ladies 142 m
This is a really challenging short hole, even in calm conditions. The green nestles below a bank to the right and has a big fall away to the left. The green is long and two-tiered and it is important to note the pin placement when selecting your club. Try to stay right, as the bank will assist your ball back to the green. A shot left results in a tough shot back up to this tricky green.
9th Hole – Par 5 – Men 491 m Ladies 417 m
To have a par 5 hole as a stroke 1 tells you that this is a particularly punishing hole that has many moods, depending on the prevailing wind. It is a long curving hole to the left and your aim will be to the right of the fairway, which narrows before moving uphill to the green. There is a steep slope to the right of the green. Out of bounds on the left will tell you that you need a precise third shot to this very tough hole.

From Cape Town take the M3 south until the end. Turn left then at the next T-junction turn right heading for Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town. Just before Fish Hoek, at the traffic lights turn right into Clovelly Road and follow the road to the Clovelly Country Club entrance.
