I recall writing in my first guide, 15 years ago, that the Devonvale Golf Course was a gem waiting to be polished to achieve its undoubted potential. Today, the visitor will appreciate that the gem has been lovingly and passionately polished and now stands proud among its peers in the cape golfing arena.

This has been achieved due to the efforts of JJ Provoyeur and his partners, ably assisted by his wife and daughters. JJ (as he is known in South Africa) is a former single-handed round the world sailor and his single-mindedness required to continuously improve this gem to its current standards can be experienced throughout this charming estate in the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands.

The original design, by Ken Elkin, was commissioned by Simon Blumberg who, over 40 years ago, foresaw the potential of developing real estate around a splendid golf course within easy reach of Cape Town. Zoning restrictions prevented his vision from being completed and for many years, despite the quality of the layout, Devonvale remained very much the country cousin to most of the established and refined courses of this area.

Nowadays JJ and his team have introduced a real estate component that does little to impact on the golf course, which is set in a natural and undulating valley blessed with adjoining vineyards and a considerable variety of established trees. To emphasise the care taken to protect the sanctity of the golfer from the housing development, the two finishing holes on the front nine were redesigned. The 8th hole, formerly a tough par 3, was transformed into a memorable par 4 curving around the large and central dam that is a feature on the course.  The 9th hole, formerly a downhill par 4, is now a wonderful and testing par 3 with the green bordering the dam to its left. Continuing improvements on the course have been ongoing with holes lengthened, tees manicured and shape given to fairways. Fortunately the original Ken Elkin design of curving, sweeping fairways winding their way up and down the tree-lined land surrounded by mountains and vines has stood the test of time. A real gem!

Devonvale is set in the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands. This location on valley slopes allows for wonderful panoramic mountain and vineyard views. The established trees add character and the large central dam feature adds a visual impact to a course that merits being called ‘a classic country course’.
The Estate has an excellent clubhouse, a hotel component, holiday houses and offers conference facilities.

Gould’s Special Note:

The hotel/lodge component, under the energetic supervision of Esther Provoyeur, has been superbly upgraded in recent times to provide a high quality good value stay in the winelands.

The Devonvale Estate  also has its own vineyards surrounding the golf course and excellent wines are available in the tasting room in the clubhouse.

Take the N1 out of Cape Town and take exit 39 onto the R304 leading to Stellenbosch. At the traffic lights turn right into Bottelary Road, then left into Devonvale Golf Estate.
