OPEN SPACES ON THE JEWEL OF THE NORTH
This course, situated in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, has in recent years made considerable improvements to its original layout. A long-term and successful upgrading plan by a vibrant committee is now showing results to what is becoming a fine golf venue.
The course has always enjoyed a reputation of being less demanding than the other Cape courses. Open spaces and a flat terrain allow a degree of error that will not be penalised too severely. The golf course nowadays has excellent fairways and good-putting surfaces, while manicuring and the introduction of newly shaped greens have served to enhance the club’s reputation.
The clubhouse and surrounds have had a facelift and a campaign to welcome visiting golfers has achieved the goal of offering a warm, friendly welcome to complement a pleasant golf outing. Please be assured that there are some testing shots required despite the space, especially over the dam in the middle of the course.
Gould’s Special Note:
The commitment to ongoing improvements throughout the course and the facilities of this club deserves a special mention and are truly noticeable.
This course has always been renowned as one of the less testing challenges in the Cape. The upgrading programme implemented by the club over several years has, however, added some bite to the challenge and the manicuring of the surrounds add a visual charm.
13th Hole – Par 4 – Men 300 m Ladies 294 m
With the dam behind you, this elevated tee offers a splendid view of the clubhouse and the Stellenbosch Mountains to your right. This short, tree-lined par 4 is probably the narrowest hole on this course. A straight drive will require a mid to short iron for the green and this shot will carry several fairway undulations. Take note of the embankment on the right otherwise your ball will be pushed away from the green into the sandy rough.
14th Hole – Par 4 – Men 361 m Ladies 295 m
This hole is known in local golfing circles as ‘The Pulpit Hole’ A wide fairway will give you time to relax before you play the second shot to a formidable green situated, it seems, in the heavens above you! Club selection is all-important here for, if you are too short, you will be playing from the bottom of the extremely steep embankment holding the large, circular green.
From Cape Town take the N1 and take Exit 23 Durbanville turn-off and turn left into Durban Road. Carry straight on for approximately 5 km. After the Durbanville Rose Garden (on your left) turn right at the third traffic light into De Villiers Drive and follow the road, through the circle, then turn right into Sport Road.
